How a Half-Life Calculation Finds Remaining Quantity
A half-life calculation counts how many half-lives have elapsed — a number that doesn't have to be whole — and halves the initial quantity that many times over, using a fractional exponent when the count itself isn't a whole number.
Read guideHow Exponential Decay Is Calculated
A quantity decaying by a fixed percentage each period shrinks by (1 − decay rate) raised to the number of periods — the same compounding idea as growth, just working in reverse.
Read guideWhy a Half-Life and a Decay Rate Describe the Same Decay Curve
Converting a half-life of 10 into its equivalent per-period decay rate, then running that rate through the general exponential decay formula, produces exactly the same 12.5-units-remaining answer as the dedicated half-life calculator.
