A worked example: 15% tip on a ₹2,000 bill, split 4 ways
A ₹2,000 bill with a 15% tip adds ₹300, for a total of ₹2,300 — split evenly across 4 people, each owes ₹575.
The formula: tip = bill × rate, total = bill + tip, per-person = total ÷ people
Tip amount = bill × tip % ÷ 100: ₹2,000 × 15 ÷ 100 = ₹300. Total = bill + tip: ₹2,000 + ₹300 = ₹2,300. Per-person share = total ÷ number of people: ₹2,300 ÷ 4 = ₹575.
Splitting alone: the same bill, one person, a smaller tip
The same ₹2,000 bill with a smaller 10% tip and just one person paying comes to ₹200 tip, ₹2,200 total, and (with nothing to split) the full ₹2,200 owed by that one person.
Why the tip is added, not subtracted
A tip increases what's owed above the bill amount — the opposite direction from a commission, which is subtracted from a sale amount. The per-person division only happens after the tip is already included in the total, not before, so everyone shares the tip proportionally along with the bill itself.
