How Deck Board and Fence Material Quantities Are Calculated

A deck's board count comes from fitting boards (plus a gap) across the deck's width, while a fence's panel count comes from dividing its total length by the panel width — both then rounded up to a whole number of pieces.

Deck boards: fitting rows across the width

For a 4m × 3m deck using 140mm-wide boards with a 5mm gap between them: each board (including its gap) covers 145mm, so the 3m width needs 3,000mm ÷ 145mm ≈ 20.7 rows, rounded up to 21 rows. Each row runs the full 4m length, and with a 10% wastage allowance, the total board length needed is 21 × 4m × 1.10 = 92.4 meters.

Fence panels: dividing the perimeter

For a 50m fence line using 2.4m panels: 50 ÷ 2.4 ≈ 20.8, rounded up to 21 panels — and since this assumes a closed-loop fence (a fully enclosed yard), the number of posts equals the number of panels, 21.

The shared pattern behind both calculations

Both start from a boundary measurement (a width or a total length), divide by the size of one repeating unit (a board's coverage or a panel's width), and round the result up to a whole number — because a project can't use a fractional board row or a fractional fence panel.

Why rounding up specifically, not to the nearest whole number
