How Speed Units Are Converted Between km/h, mph, and More

Every speed unit conversion routes through meters per second as a common reference point — convert the starting unit to m/s, then convert m/s to the target unit — rather than needing a separate formula for every possible pair.

A worked example: 100 km/h to m/s

100 km/h converts to 27.777778 m/s — dividing by 3.6, the standard shortcut for km/h to m/s (since there are 3.6 seconds-to-hours and meters-to-kilometers factors combined into one number).

The method: convert through a common reference unit

Rather than a dedicated formula for every pair of units (km/h to mph, mph to knots, knots to ft/s, and so on), each unit has a known conversion factor to meters per second — the starting value converts to m/s first, then from m/s to the target unit. This scales to any number of supported units without a combinatorial explosion of formulas.

A running-relevant example: 12 km/h to mph

A knot is 1 nautical mile per hour, used in maritime and aviation contexts, where 1 nautical mile is defined as exactly 1,852 meters — roughly 1.852 km/h per knot, a different reference distance from the standard statute mile used for mph.

Where a converted speed value connects to pace

Speed (distance per time) and pace (time per distance, like minutes per km) are inverse concepts describing the same motion — converting a speed value and converting a pace value are two sides of the identical underlying relationship.
