How to Convert Between Volume Units

Volume units convert with a fixed factor per pair — liters to cubic meters, gallons to liters, cubic meters to cubic feet — covering everything from cooking measurements to shipping container capacity.

Liters to cubic meters

One liter equals exactly 0.001 cubic meters — a clean factor, since a liter is defined as exactly one-thousandth of a cubic meter (equivalently, a cube 10cm on each side).

Gallons to liters

One US gallon equals 3.785412 liters — the standard factor for converting fuel, paint, or beverage volumes between US customary and metric measurements.

Cubic meters to cubic feet

One cubic meter equals 35.314667 cubic feet — commonly used for shipping container volumes, room air volumes, and construction material quantities that mix metric and imperial units.

Why the cubic-meters-to-cubic-feet factor is a cube

35.314667 is the meters-to-feet length factor (3.28084) cubed: 3.28084³ ≈ 35.3147. Volume is a three-dimensional measurement, so converting it between unit systems applies the underlying length conversion factor three times over — one dimension more than the area conversion factor needs, as the companion article on area versus volume conversion explains.
