The conversion factor
One meter is defined as exactly 0.3048 meters per foot in reverse — equivalently, 1 meter equals 1 ÷ 0.3048 ≈ 3.28084 feet. Multiplying any length in meters by 3.28084 gives the same length in feet.
A simple example: 10 meters
10 meters × 3.28084 = 32.808399 feet (rounded to 6 decimal places). A single meter converts to 3.28084 feet exactly, which is why the factor is worth memorizing on its own.
Scaling up, 100 meters
The same factor applies at any scale: 100 meters × 3.28084 = 328.08399 feet — exactly ten times the 10-meter result, since the conversion is a straight multiplication with no rounding tiers or thresholds involved.
Why the factor isn't a round number
The meter and the foot were standardized independently, in different measurement systems, long before there was any need for them to relate by a tidy number. The foot's modern definition (exactly 0.3048 meters) was fixed by international agreement in 1959 — which makes the meters-to-feet factor exact, just not round.
