How to Calculate the Internet Speed You Need for a Target Transfer Time
Working backward from a file size and a deadline, the required connection speed is found by dividing the file size (in bits) by the desired transfer time — the exact reverse of calculating how long a transfer will take at a known speed, and the answer scales directly with both a larger file and a tighter deadline.
Read guideMbps vs MB/s: Why Your "100 Mbps" Connection Downloads at 12.5 MB/s
Internet speeds are advertised in megabits per second (Mbps), but file sizes and download progress bars are shown in megabytes (MB) — since there are 8 bits in a byte, a "100 Mbps" connection downloads at a maximum of 12.5 MB/s, not 100 MB/s, and mixing up the two units is the single biggest source of confusion about internet speed.
